The Receptionist I have just spoken to was rude and unhelpful. I feel desperate - I am going to have to take my 2 year old to A and E because I have been told in no uncertain terms that there are no appointments for him and he can only have a phone call before they decide whether his case is deemed serious enough - despite him having a temp of 39.9.

My own doctor is great, I can always get an appointment when I need it (although I have never needed to get one in a hurry), but the reception staff are so miserable! In person, one rarely gets a smile and answering the phone the greeting was 'Surgery'. At the surgery where I work, any receptionist answering the phone gives a greeting, the name of the surgery, their name and 'How can I help?'.

To-day I was seen by Dr Frances Watt ( my nominated doctor) in a late morning appointment - which commenced very close to the expected time. Dr. Watt listened with care to my story, and I felt was both pleasant and thorough in her examination and conclusions. This consultation was consistent with my previous experience at the Newbury Street practice - I believe I have been very well treated here in all the 22 years during which I have been a patient.

Every time I have tried to get an appointment there are none available for at least a week, which I find incredibly surprising considering there are seven doctors listed. I've had the first appointment of the day and the doctor was still 30 minutes late in seeing me and I have never been seen on time at any of my appointments. The lack of early morning and evening appointments also means taking time off work to visit. Some receptions are very helpful and personable, others are the complete opposite and make you feel as if you are a terrible inconvenience for being ill. Doctors would rather prescribe drugs and tell you to come back in a few months if no better than actually attempt to work out what the cause of a problem is. All of my appointments I have been in and out in under 5 minutes. I have been a patient at 3 different medical practices before this one and my experience of those is much better than this one. The doctors do have good people skills however and do moderately well in making you feel at ease.
